“Killing Children is No Longer a Big Deal”: 2004 Op-Ed by Gideon Levy

At the height of the al-Aqsa Intifada, leftist Ha-Aretz columnist Gideon Levy wrote a damning critique of the Israeli army’s seeming inability to protect child non-combatants during its incursions into Palestinian territory. He blames the army’s “appallingly light trigger finger and dehumanization of Palestinians” for the deaths of Palestinian children. (The annual number of Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces has dropped significantly since 2008, although there are a few prominent cases every year.)

Levy reflects that “Palestinian children have no refuge: mortal danger lurks for them in their homes, in their schools, and on their streets… [t]he childhood of thousands of Palestinians is being lived from one trauma to the next.”
