“When the Boys Return”: 2013 Documentary by Al-Jazeera English

In fall 2011, filmmaker Tone Anderson spent four months in the West Bank researching the arrest and detention of Palestinian children by Israeli security forces. In January 2013, Al-Jazeera English released Anderson’s fifty minute documentary “When the Boys Return,” which examines the experiences of formerly detained Palestinian children as they attempt to re-integrate into their communities following traumatic imprisonment.

The film centers on a post-trauma rehabilitation program at the Hebron YMCA, which works with young men and boys who spent time in Israeli prisons as children. The program’s counsellor, Nadar Khallaj, organizes individual and group meetings with the program’s participants to discuss their experiences of incarceration, current emotional situation, and plans for the future.

The film is available to view online here.
